STEP 2:
Once matched, I meet with the mentee and the PI (Principal Investigator or mentor) for an initial meeting to sign the contracts and begin filling out paperwork provided by the university's office of occupational health that permits minors to work in the lab. The PI then helps arrange the student to complete the necessary laboratory training sessions through the university. I follow up with monthly meetings with PIs, parents, and students to determine the status of each student's research experience and project development.
How does SOAR work?
Locating the dedicated high school students and mentors to help expose students to an opportunity to engage in hands-on research with leading scientists at top research universities
STEP 1:
Students from Atlanta Public Schools whom we partner with are first asked if they are interested in participating in university-level research. To match them with a mentor, students list for me their field of academic research interest, five professors in that research interest from local universities they would like to work with, and send me their resumes. I then email these professors, detailing the goals of SOAR, attach the student’s resume, detail the student's demonstrated interest in their work, and ask if they are interested in hosting the students as research assistants in their labs.
